Archive a Website Using Prime Mover Plugin

Archiving a website that is no longer in use can save space while preserving the ability to reuse it in the future. The PrimeMover plugin, included with LaunchKit or available for free from the WordPress repository, makes this process simple and efficient. Here’s how to do it:

Exporting the Site

Start by accessing the Migration Tools in the back end of your site. Select the option to export and choose a full site export. You can customize your export settings to include the database, users, and plugins for an easier setup later. If space is a concern, exporting only the database is a leaner alternative, though it excludes plugins and configurations.

Creating a Package

Once you’ve configured your export settings, proceed to create a package by clicking the export button. This generates a .tar or .tar.gz file, often named with a “W prime” prefix. This file contains all the selected elements of your site, ready for storage or migration.

Storing the Archive

To store the archive securely and affordably, consider using a service like bunny.net, which offers cost-effective storage comparable to Amazon S3. Create a dedicated storage zone (e.g., “Site Archives”) and upload your file. For large files, bunny.net supports FTP connectivity to ensure a smooth upload process.

Future Restoration

Your archived file remains accessible for download via bunny.net, enabling easy restoration when needed. Using the PrimeMover plugin, you can quickly import the archive to a new location, bringing your site back to life with minimal effort.
